It’s long since I heard from you,
Do send me a letter,
I’ll wait for the postman’s ring,
The plop of your mail dropping in the box…
I’ll hold it in my hands,
And gaze at your dear familiar writing,
Slit open the cover and draw out your note.
I’ll settle in my chair to enjoy your news,
To my face I’ll hold the paper,
And sniff your faint, lingering perfume,
And press my lips on the words,
Which your fingers have touched…
I’ll place it next to my heart,
To later under my pillow,
Several times again to read and re-read,
With a little more pleasure, each time a new.
Always, it’ll be with me safe,
With the others you’ve sent…,
Tied with a ribbon;
A constant joy and comfort,
When I feel lonely and low…,
So, send me a letter…
